Increase self-awareness,

Assessments can be incredible tools for helping clients to better understand themselves and shine a light on areas for growth and development. They can also be useful in assisting clients in identifying the environments and roles that play to their strengths, offering greater opportunities for success.

The Hogan Assessment Systems, Inc. (Hogan), measures across four different inventories, the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), Hogan Development Survey (HDS), and Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) (Hogan, n.d.). The purpose is to give clients insight into their own personality, values, drivers, as well as risks and derailers (Hogan, n.d.). The Hogan HPI and HDS inventories are not designed to help discover one's identity, how you see yourself. Rather, the instruments provide insight, with 95% certainty, as to how others are likely to view you in day to day interactions, the HPI instrument, and when we are under stress, the HDS. The HDS is particularly helpful piece of the overall picture of a person. When we are stressed, or have let down our guard, become complacent, the traits show up. These are coping mechanisms that can serve us but when over-used, they result in impacts to performance, and might even disrupt progress toward our professional goals.

The Hogan is a great resource for any client but especially those looking to understand how they are showing up in their work environment, their own strengths, and the tendencies that might be getting in the way of career progression. The Hogan reports can help you to identify what type of work environments best suit you and the behavioral tendencies that begin to show when we are not appropriately matched (fit).

Besides its depth and validity, what I really like about the Hogan assessment as a coach, is that it is not providing you a set of descriptive personality markers or identity labels. It provides a comprehensive look at the traits and behaviors others might see and use to define you. It is helpful in characterizing the behavioral tendencies that can ultimately determine your reputation. Because you complete the instruments, the Hogan can be accomplished without impact to peers and colleagues. After taking the Hogan, time will be dedicated to reviewing your reports to understand what the story behind the scores. Taken together, the instruments can provide tremendous value for as a tool for professional development.

An alternative is an assessment called Principles You, which was created by Ray Dalio in partnership with Adam Grant. This assessment is completely free and provides an in-depth report direct to the client. Overall, the level of detail is not the same as the Hogan assessment. Principles you does not provide you the understanding of  yourself from the perspective others, your reputation, nor does it provide insight into how we are likely to show-up in times of stress. However, the assessment offers valuable insight regarding strengths and areas for development. Principles You also offers the opportunity to share and compare your results with others who have taken the Principles You assessment, which means it can be a great tool for understanding family, friends, and co-workers on deeper level.
